365 Blog Posts

James stole my topic – or rather, part of it. Blogging can turn into a chore. When we first started doing this blog, I knew it would be useful for encouraging traffic to our site. I didn’t realize, though, that for the blog to be effective it would have to be active for a full year (at least) with daily posts. I’ve now been advised… Thank you, James.

When you start a blog, it’s easy to get caught up in the fun. You have a shiny new toy, there are plenty of options to play with, and your creativity runs high with tons of topics.

After a couple of weeks, the well starts to run dry, especially if you are producing one blog post per day. Topics are harder to think up. If you’re dealing with a personal blog, it might not be so difficult, but when you have a business blog that requires a certain tone and specific types of information, blogging can be a lot of work. You can’t discuss what the kids did that day (or cats if you have no kids), and you can’t comment on current events or some bit of odd-ball news from the other side of the world.

After an hour or so of searching for a new topic, I realized that I was thinking of exactly what I wanted to write about for my blog post: How to find a topic. I thought you might be interested in the tips for thinking of a blog post topic that I came up with:

  • Read other blogs. Do a search on other blogs to see what other people are saying. Sometimes what you read could spark an idea. Just be sure to cite your sources and provide links. Always give credit where credit is due.
  • Read previous posts. There have been many times when I’ve read James’ past posts and wanted to comment on them. Then I realized that the comment would be perfect for a blog post instead.
  • Stock-pile topics. Take a few minutes to brainstorm a list of topics. Write the topics down as they come to mind and let the ideas flow. Don’t worry about whether or not you’re going to use all the topics you come up with.
  • Use your keywords. Take one of your blog categories and plug it into Google to see what sort of returns you get.

Of course, if all else fails, you could hire someone else to write your blog posts for you, but that’s a topic I’ll save for another day.

Bloggers not only publish contents reflecting their
moods for the day or sharing what they have done for
the past few weeks but also advertise and create a
