Ask a Writer

People see writers as a special breed. Truth be told, we are. Writers think a little differently, we see the world in a different way, and we have special talents and abilities others don’t. We’re lucky.

We writers are also the lucky ones. We do what many others only dream of: We write for a living.

Because we’re a special type of person (I won’t say eccentric) and because we actually make money writing means we are asked a lot of questions. Some of them include:

  • Have you ever published anything?
  • Do you really write all day?
  • How did you get started?
  • You really make money doing this?
  • How much do you make?

…and my personal favorite:

  • Sorry? I didn’t quite understand… What, exactly, do you do for a living?

Now it’s your turn. Do you have any questions you’d like to ask us? Do you want to know more about the mysterious life of a writer? Or how to get in the business? What we eat when we’re hungry? Got a problem you’d like help with?

Ask away – we’re ready and waiting with your answers!

How funny! Back when I did mostly technical writing my daughters’ teachers would always ask what I did. When I replied writing nearly always the next thing the said was, “How exciting! Can I read a novel that you’ve written?”

For many people that’s what writing is — creating literature.

I would like to know how to write something based on the real people on your life.
I want to be brutally truthful without having them all turn their back on me or call me on the facts. If I want to make it a fiction, how much has to be my imagination and how much is true?

  3. @ Colleen – That’s a good question, and one that you’ll have to think over and make decisions for yourself. You risk many things by writing about others – being sued, alienating friends and family, and what goal or purpose you want to achieve by writing these things.

You may want to explore the ‘net on this and find out more. A good place to start is eHow, where they point out some of what I mentioned above:
