Be Serious About Your Skills
There is more to writing than putting words on paper. Just because you have good imagination and can come up with interesting text doesn’t mean you’re a good writer. Knowing how to write properly is vital to freelance writing success. Nothing you write will read well if you haven’t used language skills to pen your text.
And yet, many who would be freelance writers don’t pay attention to writing skills. Some of the most common mistakes writers make involve improper punctuation, poor grammar and sentence structure, and misuse of the paragraph.
If you are going to be serious about writing professionally, watch out for:
The comma: Incredibly, many writers don’t know when and where to use the comma. Basic writing skills should include proper comma usage and a weakness in this area doesn’t leave a good impression.
The semicolon: This little punctuation mark may make your text look fancy, but most writers have no clue how to use the semicolon. Avoid the semicolon if you don’t know how to use it. Don’t think you know how to use the semicolon properly, either. Make sure you do.
Paragraph length: Some writers go on forever and forgo paragraph breaks. Some are paragraph-happy. Figure out when it is time to start a new paragraph or know when to group sentences together.
Sentence structure: Solid sentences are built with the right ingredients. Subjects, verbs, adverbs… They’re the bricks and mortar of a house that will stand on its own. Without structure, the whole sentences crumbles to the ground.
Google “grammar comma” and you have a plethora of information about writing properly. There isn’t any excuse for not knowing your craft inside and out.
