You can get multi-sidebar themes and widgets that look good, but they take a little looking, some trial and error, and possibly a little CSS. I think if there was a selection of proper, organized categories in the sidebar, then people would be able to explore and read without having that visual clutter in the content area. I agree with you on WP having more options than Blogger, even with the free version still being less flexible than self-hosted. A better choice of a free blogger in my opinion would be wordpress.com . Wordpress.com still has it's restrictions and limitations but not to the same extent as Blogger and it does offer premium services for a fee if the free version isn't adequate. A question here regarding the following statement from this post - "Remove the tags – while purists will scream at that suggestion, we just think it’s extra clutter." I'm not a purist but I would think that a tag would be helpful to the reader if they wanted to explore/read other posts by the blogger on the same subject.
