Sometimes life’s timing is perfect. After writing a small series on money matters for writers and then sharing my glowing praise of Quickbooks, Intuit decided to offer Simple Start 2008 – full-feature accounting software – for free.
Track your project payments, invoice customers, or keep it all internal to just stay on top of your finances. No more bits of paper scattered about or time-intensive folders and envelopes system!
Quickbooks is so simple to use – seriously. You don’t need to be a math whiz or know anything about accounting at all. It’s dummy proof.

(No, I wasn’t paid to promote QB. I just really, really, really appreciate it.)

Thanks for the tip, James. I’ve downloaded it and am in the middle of the installation.
Coolness, Sharon – Want to let me know how it works out for you?
Harry – Did you ever get your version up and running?
@James: I did, but my comp was picky about it and something in it was conflicting and causing a problem. The comp blue-screened at one point and on the check disc start-up it showed the program as the issue. I think I’ve got too many programs on this, the graphics being the biggest hogs. So, until I can afford a Mac G5 and all of the Mac OS programs to replace my PC OS graphics programs, I really can’t put it on Command Central.
But…*has a flash of brilliance* I should try installing it on the laptop, which has practically nothing on it. I’ll do that and get back to you.
This is great and so much better than using a spreadsheet. As your business grows its easier to upgrade Quickbooks than keep adding to an old spreadsheet!
