Publishing Etiquette

James sent me a link yesterday. When I went to look at the website, I saw that one of James’ articles had been published as part of someone’s advertising campaign for an ebook on how to write ebooks.

At first, James was amused to see his work used on someone else’s page to push an ebook sale. I, on the other hand, had my usual skeptical response. To me, it looked like Jamie’s article endorsed a product we knew nothing about. The wording of the sales push left the impression that Jamie’s article was included inside the ebook as well. I told James to rattle off an email to the webmaster and find out exactly what was going on.

It turns out the author of the book had no idea her affiliate was using the sales tactic. While James received proper credit for the article that was used, there was still a little matter of etiquette.

If you are going to use someone else’s work on your site, it’s a good idea to email the author and give them a heads up that you want to use the material. In addition, give them credit.

I would have liked to see a sample of the ebook in question before having my name associated with it. I’m very picky about how my work is used, be it graphics or writing. I would think that any writer, artist or company would be the same. A poor product that has your name associated in some way could be detrimental to your business and all the work you have done to build up a decent reputation.

In the case of Jamie’s article, the tactic toed the line of being ethical. While the rules and regulations had been followed, James had received credit, and there was nothing that infringed on copyright. The sales strategy, wording, and manner of use of Jamie’s article doesn’t sit well with either of us, though.

It only takes a few minutes to write an email to an author or artist to request permission to use their work. Save yourself the hassle of being contacted by an irate author who happens to stumble across his or her work as James did. Cover your bases. You’ll be glad you did, and the authors and artists will thank you for your consideration.
