This is a question I have often pondered, especially since I run multiple companies. What I learned through trial and error is that branding your company is much more powerful than branding a personal name, which can be associated with a company.

If you brand your company and later sell that company, the branding is already done and the products or services will follow that company no matter who owns it.. If you brand your name and change products, it can confuse your customers and result in lost sales for your remaining services.

I think my comment at copyblogger is like number 71, so let me say thank you here as well for writing this.

My entire being is now bent towards even more than just branding the business over the person. It has to do with something Brian said to me at SOBCon. One of the first things he said to me when we had a chance to speak to each other was, "When are you getting out of consulting?" My jaw dropped. But it all made sense when he delivered his presentation and said we should strive to build an asset, not a job.

That's what I'm working towards. Thanks for the inspiration!
