Something For Nothing

We all have moments where a friend (or a friend of a friend) offers to write, create artwork, or set up a website for free. Most of the time, the person offering has recently discovered a new talent, and he or she is eager to share it with the world. The individual wants a shot at proving how well they can use (please stop using utilize, that’s antiquated – think of what you’d say out loud) these new skills and you are an easy target.

So here you are: the business owner. Either you have a specific image in mind for your company’s portrayal, or you might be like our friend Randall, someone unfamiliar with the technical aspects of a task. You trust the person, and you’re willing to put your company’s image on the line to give this diamond in the rough a shot.

Sometimes you get lucky. The job turns out well for both parties. Other times, the business owner ends up with a project that looks amateurish. Free doesn’t always constitute good. (don’t refer back to old posts, they’re done, gone, finished. Everything is fresh and new as if we’ve said it the first time) It’s very easy for anyone to learn a new program or skill. Whether they can use (thank you) either item well is another story.

Before you hire an artist of any kind, ask for a portfolio or some samples of work. If the work isn’t up to your standards, don’t be afraid to tell that person, “No, thank you.” Try not to let your emotions get in the way (if this person is a friend), and don’t allow them to guilt-trip you into the deal. Usually when someone offers free work, they’re desperate to give their work away.

If you honestly feel this person has a clue as to what they’re doing, then by all means, give them a try. Consider the pros and cons first, and treat the person the same way you would any other individual asking you for a job. Don’t end up like poor Randall with a substandard piece of work.
