Sticky Business Contest Winners: Congrats!

mwp_contest_sm

In November, we asked readers if they ever wanted to get unstuck from where they were. The resounding answer came back, and it was, “Yes!”

Our Sticky Business Contest received fantastic response, and nearly two hundred people entered. It was a tough competition though, not an easy random win, and after four weeks of task-work, only a little over 30 people were still in the game.

It’s time for us to announce the winners – and trust us, judges had a very hard time deciding who those winners would be. Everyone worked hard, ideas were original and contestants had done their research.

We received many emails thanking us for hosting the contest, because the tasks gave them direction, guidance, and pause for thought. Many people said that they were winners regardless, because their business idea took shape just from having answered the questions we asked.

If you want to benefit from the four easy questions that can help get your business idea off the ground, check out the Sticky Business tasks:

Before we release the names of winners, we’d like to thank our sponsors (thank you, thank you!!) and invite you to visit each of their sites.

And now for the winners.

First Prize Package – total prize value of $11,723.94 – Jared Covington

Whenever people ask what I do for a living and they find out my history of more than a decade working in the music industry with some of the biggest pop stars in the world, the first thing they ask is always, “I make music (or know someone who does). If I get you a copy of their stuff, can you give them some suggestions on how to get a record deal?”

When I tell them that they can make more money (and more effectively) by not getting a record deal at all, most refuse to believe that doing things on their own is even an option. I want to use my experience to teach musicians how to generate income by doing what they love without signing their life away to a record label and give them tools and guides to do it on their own.

Jared wins:

Second Prize Package – total prize value of $3,050.94 – Maggie Marton

Oh My Dog! will be the premiere shopping destination for pet owners in Bloomington, Indiana, offering all the necessities and goodies for healthy pets and happy people, from spa and grooming supplies to toys and homemade bakery treats.

But Oh My Dog! is more than just a shopping destination. It’s a community center for pets and their people. Want to make a scrapbook dedicated to Fido? We will offer a scrapbooking class. Interested in learning pet first aid? We’ll be offering a weekend session to teach the basics. Trainers will host seminars and workshops, too.

Bloomington is a small town with a very big heart, and we know that our customers value giving back. We will be reaching out to local shelters and the Monroe County Humane Association to discuss how our proceeds can help make their programs more successful, and our space will be offered to humane organizations for workshops and adoption events.

Maggie wins:

Third Prize Package – total prize value of $2,054.94 – Paul Orselli

I would like to provide affordable interactive exhibits and exhibit furniture built from “green” materials to museums. The company would be called “Eco-Zibits” to stress both the economy and ecology inherent in our products.

These economical and eco-friendly exhibits would allow museums to stretch their overburdened budgets while providing exciting and safe new activities for their visitors to enjoy.

Our choice of materials, finishes, and construction methods would limit the carbon footprint of our company, and we would attempt to utilize sustainable methods to provide the energy needed to produce our products. After museums were finished using their Eco-Zibits, they could be easily disassembled and recycled.

Paul wins:

We’d like to thank everyone who entered, participated, and helped make our contest a success. Let’s hear it for our winners!

  1. Wow, congratulations to the winners!

    *standing ovation*

Even though I didn’t enter, I’ve still got to thank you both for having such a great, thought-provoking contest. Even if you hadn’t offered the prizes, I think quite a few of us got a ton of value out of the four tasks. :)

  4. This looks like it was a great contest. I have only been reading your blog for a few days so I am going to go back and look at the questions you asked.
I am especially impressed that so many people offered prizes. I think the internet is changing how we do business for the better. The majority of people I come into contact with on the web are genuinely concerned about helping others to succeed. I am not sure if it is because the average age of internet entrepreneurs is younger than the general business population or not, but it seems to be less “dog eat dog” competition and more “let’s work together to help both parties.”
This is what our world needs and hopefully these new business builders can help to counteract the misdeeds done in the US the last 8 years.
Congrats to the winners and thank you to the people who donated prizes. I will use your services whenever I can.

  5. Fantastico! Congrats to the winners.

I was a contestant and even though I didn’t Win, Place or Show, I still won. The contest allowed me to focus my efforts and really examine what I was doing. My business is better for it.

Thanks for the great opportunity, guys.

    Cheers!

  6. So not only was I born 400 years too late, but it looks like I started visiting this blog 4 months too late. Geesh!

Okay, just kidding. But do you think you’ll be repeating this contest? I could always read the exercises, and will, but contests make a sort of community and everyone likes to win prizes!

Oh, and I have something to donate if you do.

  7. @ Terry – The contest actually ended up costing me about 5k just in legal fees, duties, government compliance, etc. That was out of pocket and from my generosity. Add to that hours of time to organize, discuss, stay on top of paperwork, etc… Um… Yeah. I like helping people, but I don’t foresee myself doing this again anytime soon. :)

@ Everyone – Thanks for your congrats to the winners – that’s really nice to hear, it’s great encouragement and I do appreciate it!!

  11. Congratulations to all! I did enter and was pleased with myself for completing all four tasks :) After seeing the three winners and their concepts, they deserve the prizes. I wish them all well.

  12. Thanks for the contest. It helped me to focus on my writing career and even look for avenues to expand it. I’ve also shared the challenges with my husband to help him get his drama business started. This was a great contest for all that saw it to its finish!

  13. @ Terry. Me too! I wish I’d been reading this blog in time to enter the competition!

@James & Harry. Thanks for running the comp and all your time effort and $$$ that went into it!

  14. Wow James – those are impressively huge prizes.. I don’t often enter competitions and I missed the initial announcement for this one. In the future I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for the word “competition” in my feed reader.

  15. Congratulations to the winners! And James and Harry, you guys are so generous you make me wish I had a business.
