Social skills involve more than some emails or behaving in public. Interacting with others on all levels helps increase business revenues. Yesterday, I mentioned some tips to use body language and behavior to increase revenues. Now I’ll take a look at two emotional aspects of social skills that help you land more clients:
Being human involves two important social skills that increase business success: empathy and sympathy.
Empathy is the identification with someone else’s pain or troubles; you feel for them by understanding they’re hurting. Sympathy is the sharing of someone’s emotions; you have been there, done that and you feel his or her pain.
Behind every business deal is two people – just two ordinary, regular people: you and the client. Never forget that.
If a client is having a hard time in his personal life or business, show a little sympathy. People have a long memory for an act of kindness or a gentle word. They’ll think well of the person who demonstrates a human side, a little bit of emotion and feeling.
It doesn’t take much to show those feelings, either. A small comment like, “It must be difficult…,” or, “I’m so sorry for you…” reaches out to consumers and touches them personally. Use empathy and sympathy to create a valuable bond between you, the businessperson, and them, the consumers.
