Using Social Skills to Increase Business Revenue, Part 5 of 5

Yesterday’s post about social skills and better business touched on how empathy and sympathy create valuable bonds between you and your clients.

But nothing bonds two people faster than a secret.

Come on, admit it. Everyone loves being in on a secret. It makes us feel trusted and important; we’re special and privileged. We know something no one else does.

Use this to your business advantage. Share a small secret that spins your business in a positive light– even if it isn’t really a secret. Talk about upcoming expansion or a new product or service that hasn’t hit the market yet. Using just the right tone of voice and pairing it with, “Maybe I shouldn’t be telling you this, but…,” can turn a client into a best buddy.

Since your client now feels trusted and important, he or she will be more loyal, feeling closer to you. That’s one benefit; a steady customer is good for your revenues. The second benefit is that secrets spread fast – people can’t resist telling friends. Your business gains a ton of free PR.

One last important social skill for entrepreneurs: Have a good, firm handshake. Practice it, if you have to. You’ll soon have clients eating out of the palm of your hand.
