We Need Your Opinion!

Yesterday, we blogged about seven decisions you need to take about how often you should post to your blog. We’d be remiss if we didn’t examine our own rate of posting.

And we’re at a crossroads, folks. Harry and I have talked over how frequently we post. We’re really on the fence about whether to cut back or to keep going at our daily rate.

Since your opinion matters, let’s hear what you think. Hey, we even installed a nifty poll plug-in so you could vote with one click! Tell us what you think about how often we should post, and the majority rules. (We reserve the right to override the decision, of course).

Here’s what we’ve talked over:

We love blogging, but the blogosphere tends to maintain a fast and furious pace. We feel that if we took more time to write better posts, the blog would benefit.

We’re guilty as charged for posting just to get one post out a day, but for a very good reason: building credibility. We don’t feel we blog for the sake of blogging, though. We write because we do enjoy it.

Deciding whether our page rank was a priority was a no-brainer. Our readers are our first priority. We really don’t care much about what Google thinks, because we feel that how Google determines site ranking is pretty damned silly. Decide what your readers prefer.

As far as whether less posting would hurt our blog stats, we don’t think so. We didn’t post from the 25th to the 2nd, and the blog’s readership, hits, and comments went up.

Our goal has always been to strengthen the writing community and help writers improve on many levels. This blog was our way of contributing to that goal. We appreciate reader involvement, comments, and feedback at all times, and we love when readers get involved in discussions.

We do need a little more free time, though. 2006 was a busy year, and 2007 was crazy. We often clocked 50- and 60-hour workweeks. The blog isn’t to blame – we do write for a living.

But with those work hours, I can’t play guitar without getting sore fingertips after 15 minutes, and Harry grumbles we haven’t worked on our novel in months. We’ve neglected our hobbies, interests and quality time with family and friends to concentrate on the business. We think it’s time to find the right balance and figure out which areas to focus on more or less.

We started blogging to market the business, build credibility and promote a strong reputation. Somewhere along the way, the blog took off. It became a creature with a mind of its own.

It’s all good; blogging is one of our most favorite parts of our business. We’d like to concentrate more on our blog this year, developing it and building it up even further, too. We want to see just how far we can take it. We want it to be good, damned good.

Tom Cochran said it best: My boy’s gonna play in the Big Leagues.

If you haven’t gone to vote, what are you waiting for? We need your opinion on how often we should be posting and what suits our readers best. So go. Vote. One click, that’s all we need.

(Of course, all comments are welcome, too!)

  1. Just off to vote in your poll. I decided to post less on my blog, but ironically, once the pressure was off, I was still posting more than 25 times a month. Only some of those were in depth posts, though; the rest were short posts about things of interest to readers.

You have been given a ROAR Award. Enjoy – and pass it on! :)

Once or twice a week perhaps?

  3. Harry says:

@Sharon H: Thanks for the award! *blinks at pink lion and wonders if the New Year’s celebration hasn’t worn off yet* They need to redesign the award icon though.
@Sharon Q: Thanks for the vote!

  4. Hmm, I’m getting the message you guys want to post less, but since this is one of my favorite blogs, I had to vote for you to continue posting daily.

  5. James says:

*grin* Actually, I love posting. Harry wants to stick with a daily post, and I lean that way, too. But overwhelming readers isn’t a good thing, so we’re testing the waters.

  6. Harry says:

Daily posts are my limit, both for writing and reading. I’ve noticed that some bloggers (John Chow for one) often put up several posts in a single day. That’s a bit much for my tastes.

  7. ellen says:

Do the daily then. Play guitar at night after your mind is fried. Work on the novel in the morning when mind is fresh! You could try a basic routine and then fine tune it. I don’t know. It’s hard, isn’t it?

  8. James says:

@ Ellen – In a perfect world… ;) I have a very hard time sticking to routines (which is probably why I do so well at my job!)

Go ahead - speak your mind!
