Would anyone care if all the blogs in the world disappeared overnight? Sometimes, I wish they would.
“What’s “spouse”?”
James didn’t miss a beat. “Husband, wife, partner?” Somehow, I knew that was coming. “You didn’t know that?”
“No, I knew that.” A virtual rolling of the eyes. “What were you going to blog about spouses for?”
“I think you have to be married to be declared a spouse… – OH! Damned if I can remember.”
Such is the way conversations often go around here between us.
Since “spouse” wasn’t enough of an inspiration for me (and unrelated to our business), I found another idea in the stockpile : whether anyone would miss blogs if they disappeared.
As much as I’d like to say no, blogs wouldn’t be missed, they are just a fad destined to fade into oblivion, I doubt that’s true. Blogs might evolve, but they will never go away. I think it’s human nature to desire communication and the blog has opened a virtual Pandora’s Box we’ll never be able to shut. People would care, they would miss blogs, and as Jeff Goldbloom said in
This is similar to people’s ideas of a paperless society. When I worked in a corporate office, there was always talk of going paperless, having everything stored on computers and doing away with endless piles of paperwork. That will never happen either. Humans are very slow to let go of things they feel comfortable with, and the same with blogs.
Face it, blogs are here to stay. Too many people have opinions and like to talk for the sake of hearing (or reading) their own voice. Right now, blogs are a bright, shiny new toy. We have yet to realize the full potential of blogs. We’re still kids in a massive playground where no real rules apply. Yet.
I think if blogs did disappear, I would probably miss them, as much as I hate to admit it, . Call it a love/hate relationship. On a good day, when the ideas are flowing like free beer at a keg party on a Saturday night, I love blogging. Other times, I wish I could find a place to hide from blogs, like a well-stocked bunker.
Besides, if blogs disappeared, how would I be able to bestow all of you with my wit and wisdom?
