Choosing just two Damn Fine Words writing contest winners out of many talented, deserving people is one of the most difficult choices I make every year.
I read every entry. I think about what every person expresses in their words. I put myself in their shoes and imagine myself in their situation. I cheer for some, smile at others and applaud each person for their effort.
For many more, my heart goes out to you. The stories you share with me about how much a difference the Damn Fine Words writing course would make to your life makes this choice a hard one.
But I can only pick two.
I don’t make the decision alone. A small panel of judges, including Peter Shallard (THE shrink for entrepreneurs) and Taylor Lindstrom (my teammate, close friend and copywriter I’ve worked with for years), look over every entry and come to a consensus.
We look for people who’ve shown that they’ll put their skills to good use, in a way that will help them actually change their life – not just inwardly on a personal level but outwardly in their personal situation and also the lives of others.
We look for people who show resolve and dedication – who show us that even if they don’t win the scholarship, they’ve made a decision to move forward and actually create change on their own, by hook or by crook.
We look for people who have the courage to try new things, to go out of their comfort zone, and to stand firm and determined despite being challenged every step of the way.
So many of the entrants fit our criteria that… well, like I said, it’s tough to choose. And after great deliberation, several shortlists, and many discussions, the judges and I narrowed it down to two lucky winners.

To everyone who wrote a post and entered the contest… thank you. You made the judges and I laugh, smile, and wish we could take all of you under our wing. Your stories were touching, your determination strong and your hopes full of potential. You have our applause and encouragement, always.
Here’s what’s important: Don’t stop now. Many of you wrote that you’re ready for change. So take advantage of this decision and keep moving forward from where you are now to make that change happen, one step at a time.
Your entry was just the beginning.
